MANAGING YOUR STRESS AND PROTECTING YOUR MAGIC

You don’t always have to be a ‘superwoman’… it’s far more crucial to learn how to protect your mental health and manage stress – we’ll give you a few tips on how.

The perception of being a “strong Black woman” is more than a societal cliché. As Black women, it’s easy to feel obligated to take on the superwomen role, projecting ourselves as strong, stress-free, and emotionless to cope with the stress of daily race and gender-based bias that we so often experience.

The urge to be perfect at home and work and putting others first all contribute to the chronic stress Black women face. Symptoms of this chronic stress include irritability, exhaustion, headaches, emotional eating, sleep issues, digestive issues, substance addiction, anxiety, and frequent colds or illnesses.

While all women suffer pressures, Linda Goler Blount, President and CEO of the Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI), maintains that “the disparities in the impact of stress on the health and well-being of Black women cannot be overlooked. There is a lot of stress in the lives of Black women, and their stories show that”.

And yes, there is a natural strength that we possess as women, but we deserve to live softly. Here are a few ways to help you get a handle of your stress.

5 UNIQUE WAYS TO MANAGE STRESS

It’s impossible to prevent all stress from coming into our lives, but the good news is that there are things you can do to lessen daily stress or at least help manage it better.

1) Learn To Say “No” and Find Balance

Black women nowadays have multiple responsibilities to fulfill, and because each role can be time-consuming, finding balance can be difficult. Finding balance is a never-ending process of learning. The most important thing to remember is that you should be patient with your own progress.

When you set boundaries people will test them. But you have to practice self-preservation and sometimes the best way to do this is by saying “no.” You can’t sacrifice your needs just to be amicable. “No” is a complete sentence…find power in that.

2) Light Some Candles

Candles are one of the simplest methods to create a calming ambience in your home; they provide light and warmth that instantly transform any area into something cozy. When essential oils are added to the wax, the resulting scent also helps to alleviate stress.

You simply need to choose fragrances that help with stress and anxiety, like relaxing lavender, energizing chamomile, sweet vanilla, fresh citrus scents, or purifying sage or eucalyptus.

3) Practice Bathtub Meditation

Meditation is a practice that can enhance stress relief and inner calm. One way to put it into your daily routine is to meditate in the bath. Having a bath while meditating can soothe fatigued muscles, calm the mind, and temporarily disengage your mind from tensions.

Also, it’s worthy to note that if sleep has eluded you over the last few days, a bath may help. At night, your body temperature decreases by a few degrees. Sitting in warm/hot water boosts your core temperature, yet it improves sleep when done 1-2 hours before bedtime.

4) Use Natural remedies to manage stress

Using natural remedies to relieve stress is a new fave that you might find helpful. One way to do that is to use CBD, or cannabidiol, a cannabinoid extracted from the cannabis plant. Many people are using CBD to relax and stay calm when they are going through a stressful time. Others say it helps them think more clearly and clear up their brain fog.

It’s been said that products like full-spectrum CBD oil, broad-spectrum CBD oil, CBD gummies, and more can help with everything from PTSD symptoms to blood pressure to stress.

Before you use CBD to deal with stress or generalized anxiety, think about seeing a doctor. While CBD may assist, a healthcare professional can get to the bottom of what is causing your excessive stress.

5) Don’t be afraid to get support

Black women often feel alone, especially when stressed and overwhelmed. It’s okay to get help. Reaching out for help can help you find solutions and clear your head. We recommend seeing professional help. A therapist can help you learn healthy ways to deal with emotional tension and help you figure out how to eliminate things in your life that cause stress.

And always remember, making self-care a priority isn’t selfish…it can be lifesaving.

Hispanic Heritage Month is coming to an end but we have some great Latinx beauty brands you can celebrate 24/7!

In a world where the standard of beauty often seems monolithic, largely appealing to the young or European standards, Black and Brown women can often feel excluded. It’s great that the beauty industry is expanding and working towards becoming more inclusive, but let’s be real, we still got a ways to go. Finding high-quality, artisan beauty products made by people of color is still a challenge. Here at Aurum79 Beauty, we are always on the hunt to introduce a world of beauty and that prioritizes your skin, hair, and wellness needs, including some of the best Latinx brands.

Hispanic communities are among the largest minority groups in the US, at more than 60 million people and 18% of the total U.S. population. According to Beauty Inc “The Latinx beauty shopper outspends peers by nearly 30%”. Although they are some of the top beauty spenders they are also among the least recognized when it comes to the brand makers. We want to change this narrative by supporting Latinx businesses and giving them a platform to share their amazing beauty products. Check out some of our Latinx Aurum79 Beauty partners below!

Ella’s Eve:

Founded by Dominican sisters Melissa Polanco and Lissa Martinez, Ella’s Eve Cosmetics is a Latina-owned makeup brand that promotes confidence and celebrates inner beauty.  Recognizing that there was a lack of Latinx representation in the beauty space, the sister duo wanted to do something about it. Through this realization and a newfound love for makeup, the sister duo eventually launched Ella’s Eve.  Shop the highly pigmented “Make It Your Eve” Eyeshadow Palette, with 15 highly pigmented colors and various finishes for any, and every occasion.

Pink Root:

Pink Root’s motto is “We don’t believe in bad hair, just bad hair care”. This natural haircare brand was created to help improve the transition from chemically treated and heat damaged hair to natural hair. It’s also great for maintaining healthy curls and coils. All of the ingredients have been carefully chosen to nurture and revitalize all textures and hair types.  Founder Mariel Mejia who was born in NYC and is of Dominican heritage was inspired to create the brand after her own hair frustrations.  “I grew up constantly relaxing and straightening my hair because it was considered less than. I thought these methods of altering my texture were perfectly normal until I was about 18 years old and realized how much damaged this caused my hair” she told us in a Q&A.  She was left with a lot of irreversible damage and wanted to change the narrative of the natural hair care industry. She created her own formulas in her mother’s kitchen and noticed a significant change her hair, from then she knew she was on to something.

Shop the full line to keep curls and coils looking healthy and fab;  the Leave-In Conditioner, Curl Enhancing Lotion, and Curl Styling Paste. Every product is designed to rejuvenate dry, damaged, and/or dull hair. Her nourishing formulas also soften, smooth, and fight frizz on those extra humid days.

We’re always on the lookout for beauty brands that align with our mission, but drop us a line if there are any Latinx beauty brands you’d love to see on the site!

Yup, it’s OFFICIAL, Official!

Ok y’all, 2020 has been a year. We hope you’ve been staying safe and protecting your mental space! It’s been quite the year for us too, but we’re excited because we’ve launched our e-marketing place, aurum79beauty.com!

So…allow us to re-introduce ourselves…

We are Aurum79 Beauty. A Black & Latina women owned e-marketplace for indie beauty and wellness products created by men and women of color. For us “Inclusivity” isn’t just a trend, but a standard. We intentionally set out to create a space for brands/products that consider skin tone, celebrate a variety of hair types and honor age. A place where we are always prioritized when it comes to beauty.

“Like myself, so many women enter a new decade of life and then realize the (hair and skin) beauty regimen they are used to isn’t quite working anymore. It’s important for us to support the beauty & wellness needs for women of color throughout every phase of life.” – Bridget, Co-Founder

“Our hair & skin is beautiful, yet sometimes it can be complicated. Because people of color come in all shades and hair types, we need options to explore what works best for an individual. No longer can we live in a world where mainstream beauty stores carve out a corner of their shelves.”- Nathalie, Co-Founder

“Navigating beauty can be super easy or daunting when in reality it should be an enjoyable experience. Let’s’ take hair for example. Textured hair is so diverse and beautiful but requires a lot of trial and education. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough representation across all textures unless you have a certain curl pattern. At Aurum79, we want to make sure that everyone can easily find the products and information that’s right for them.” – Camille, Co-Founder

With that said, our goal is to connect you with the DOPEST indie brands that are truly inclusive. We partner with brands from all over and carefully select products that meet your specific needs. Regardless of your age, skin tone, and hair type, we got you.

It’s been a slow build, but we have a lot of exciting new updates, brand info, tutorials, contests, etc. coming soon so stay tuned! Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter if you haven’t already and follow us on Instagram @aurum79.beauty.

In the meantime, get your shop on!

Self-Care Awareness Month is still on our radar and we’re checking out the best new brands and services you need to relax, indulge, and pamper yourself.  While spa treatments and mani/pedis tend to get all the hype, it’s important to take into account all aspects of self-care, inside & out! If you’re longing to satisfy both, look no further than October Lotus — a holistic healing & self-care company that provides Reiki services and organic herbs for womb wellness.

Ladies, we all need to take extra care of our feminine parts, and one way to do it is through Yoni steaming. An age-old natural remedy, Yoni steaming is the process of cleansing your vulva with a combination of healing herbs and distilled hot water to maintain reproductive health.

The steam from October Lotus’ herbal mixture helps to resolve hormonal imbalances, provides nourishment for the vaginal & uterine tissues, and dislodges accumulations of menstrual fluid.  It is an amazing act of self-care.

If you aren’t quite ready for yoni steaming, you can still experience womb wellness benefits from the drinkable teas offered by October Lotus.

Happy Self-Care Awareness Month

September is a time to pay attention to something that is quite often overlooked in the day-to-day grind: self-care.

Stress is practically ubiquitous to adulting, so self-care is so important. But sometimes practicing self-care can seem like yet another task to add to the to-do list that you simply don’t have time for.

Though it can seem like a chore, finding simple ways to prioritize physical, mental and emotional health can have long term benefits that keep your inner and outer beauty whole.

ESSENCE editor and writer, Kimberly Wilson, shared an article highlighting nine relatively simple self-care acts, like meditating and saying “no,” that can be incorporated into your daily routine.
