Yes, The Maskne Struggle Is Real…

Wearing a mask has become a part of our everyday routine. You probably have a basket of cute masks in rotation to choose from before you head out. Whether you rock disposable or reusable masks, many of us are experiencing more breakouts around our masked areas – commonly referred to as “maskne”. When sweat, oil and bacteria are trapped under there, it creates the perfect opportunity for acne.

So what can you do about it? Don’t worry we have a few tips that can help!

1. Wash your mask often or throw it out.

We know it’s a pain but you should really try to wash your mask after each use. You wash your pillowcase often don’t you? Just like your pillow, your mask is a haven for all the gross stuff like dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. Also, it’s just safer to take extra precaution! Or you can make it easier on yourself and purchase disposables and call it a day.

2. Cleanse & remove makeup!

Cleansing is extra essential now since your skin is covered, especially if you’ve been wearing makeup. We recommend double cleansing! Double cleansing will ensure that all your makeup is removed in addition to dirt, bacteria and excess oil. We recommend the KoKo Moon Cleansing Oil as a first step to wipe away make up dirt, and grime, and then follow with the in|harmony balancing face cleanser for an additional cleanse and to help soothe breakouts, and prevent clogged pores.

3. Exfoliate

Your skin could use a nice reset after all that mask wearing. We highly recommend a light exfoliation to break down clogged and dead skin cells. Try Natural Mixologist’s No. 35 Detoxify Detox Activated Charcoal, Bentonite Clay and French Green Clay Mask. This mask is for days when you need something more than a typical cleanse. It deeply cleanses and detoxifies. It’s great for all skin types, including acne-prone skin.

4. Soothe & Spot Treat

Turmeric is a spice that has been used in Southeast Asia for centuries. It’s known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties that can help treat breakouts, reduce acne scarring, and bring out your natural glow. Give your skin the benefits of this wonder spice with Natural Mixologist’s No. 36 Turmeric and Honey Facial Mask that cleanses hydrates, and helps to treat acne & dark spots. It’s one of our best sellers for a reason!

Target and treat breakouts with the in|harmony hydrating hibiscus toner. Just a couple of sprays will help to purify skin by breaking down dead cells and increasing turnover. It tones and gently exfoliates as well and helps to control acne.

5. Pause on the makeup and moisturize instead.

Your best bet is to try and limit the amount of makeup you wear, especially under your mask to avoid clogging pores. Instead, use a moisturizer to keep skin hydrated and protected. Use a water-based formula such as Beija Flor Naturals, Acai Mango Lotion. It’s a creamy facial moisturizer that absorbs perfectly into skin. You’ll have a nice healthy, shine-free glow, perfect for when you want to ditch the makeup.
